BSAIL organized a guest lecture by advocate Ravindra Gupta on 15th June 2022. The topic of the lecture was “The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen Act, 2007.”
Mr. Ravindra Gupta, in his address, stated that a law student is a privileged class in society, and rendering legal aid by law students is a duty bestowed upon them. He explained that the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWP) Act, 2007 is important legislation in India to safeguard the elderly from exploitation and abuse. He critically evaluated the implementation of the MWP Act, 2007, and the related challenges in protecting senior citizens from abuse. He also highlighted the proposed amendments in the Act to strengthen the effective implementation of legal protection for senior citizens and ensure their well-being and dignity.
There is an immediate need to incorporate the necessary amendments so that the Act gets more pragmatic value, becomes an important tool for elderly care and protection, reduces vulnerabilities, and ensures holistic care with support in various bio-psycho-social domains. The main objective of the guest lecture was to introduce and educate the students by disseminating legal awareness amongst them as well as in the society at large and to help the poor and needy people by extending free legal services through the Legal Aid Clinic.
